This workshop provides an overview of behaviours in dementia and communicating in a supportive manner. It will focus on providing participants with the knowledge of how behaviours and communication can change over the course of the disease and ways to supportively communicate with a person living with dementia.
Participants will learn about the neurobiology of addiction and how persons living with dementia respond to substance use. Participants will also learn how to spot withdrawal from a substance and how to support a managed approach for substance use in a person living with dementia. Participants will be able to plan for transition to care by supporting tapering or stopping a substance for preoperative and perioperative care and or transition to long term care.
